Medicaid covers durable medical equipment for eligible patients in the home. Equipment that is covered by Medicaid is covered at 100%.
Medicaid covers a limited number of items in a long term care facility.
Medicare Part B covers durable medical equipment for eligible recipients in the home. Medicare does not cover any equipment in facilities. If an individual has Medicare Part A but does not have Medicare Part B, there is no coverage for equipment.
Medicare Part B covers 80% of the cost of equipment. The remaining 20% is the responsibility of the patient if there is no co-insurance. Some items are considered "capped rental" items and are rented for 13 months. After 13 months, the equipment is owned by the patient. All maintenance will then be the responsibility of the patient.
Private insurers generally follow Medicare coverage guidelines but the financial coverage varies by payer.
